Ruth Cloonan:  I've always had a passion for environmental issues and conservation. Following local events and participating in local educational opportunities lead me to various encounters with SCARCE over the years. I've always admired their expertise and leadership. Serving on the board gives me the opportunity to work on something that I'm extremely passionate about and to work with an organization with an uncompromising drive to achieve their mission.

Linette George:  Linette George is President of Get Organized by George, Inc., a company focused on helping people get more done, in less time, with less stress. She's passionate about teaching people how to slow down and live more simply, with a focus on quality of life over quantity of stuff. She incorporates the green principles of reuse, recycling, donating, and conscious purchasing when working with her clients. She has been involved with SCARCE since 2003, and a Board Member since 2009.

Kay_McKeen_fall_2007_pictureKay McKeen is the Founder and Executive Director of School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE). As a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization, the SCARCE team reaches thousands of people yearly – in schools, businesses and community groups - with innovative environmental education programs.  Local, national, and international newspapers and magazines have recognized Kay for the effectiveness of the programs she and her team have developed. In addition, Kay frequently speaks at events and on cable and televised programs to inspire people on how to care for the earth.

SCARCE Summer Internships Print E-mail


SCARCE Internships offer the opportunity to work with our dynamic environmental non-profit. During the summer, interns will assist with the wide array of projects that SCARCE conducts across DuPage County, Illinois. Interns are full-time staff and are considered an integral part of the energy and creativity that defines our organization.


Internship duties include:
• Assisting with SCARCE’s famous teacher workshops “Where Is Away?” and “Shed Those Watershed Blues.”
• Presenting educational workshops for local schools, day care centers, and community organizations.
• Participating in DuPage County festivals and fairs to educate the community about sustainability and environmental stewardship.
• Leading tours of SCARCE to college groups and other visitors. 
• Assisting with SCARCE internal operations, record keeping, and warehouse organization.



This internship enhances community organizing skills and provides practical experience in designing environmental education programs, working with local government and businesses, and of course, reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting!  If you’re interested in applying, please contact or call (630) 545-9710
