Students Inspired to Recycle At Home Print E-mail

"The other benefit was that several students were inspired to go home and start a recycling program at the their home to promote saving the environment. How does one measure teaching young children about how to save the Earth? "

Family Reading Night Print E-mail

"Our school made learning about the environment and taking care of the earth one of our priorities this year. SCARCE inspired our cause by helping us earn the earth flag. We had a Family Reading Night with over 300 people in attendance. The theme of the evening was the book "The Lorax" which is about the need to take care of the environment. SCARCE came and made presentations to the audience. They taught us the importance of recycling, how to recycle, and what to recycle. We had only positive comments about the evening."

Esther Frohne - Cloverdale School

Earth Flag has Impact Print E-mail

We have both our Earth Flag and our Ecology Flag. SCARCE has come to do a workshop with teachers, a green audit and a waste audit. The kids were involved in our audits and learned so much. From this we have improved all aspects of our school. It has made a tremendous impact on the lives of our students, parents, teachers and administrators in their personal lives.

Earth Flag Impacts Students for the Rest of Their Lives Print E-mail

The Earth Flag symbolized that our school was operating in an environmentally friendly way. For eight years of grammar school both of my children were encouraged by our school to use reusable lunch bags, sandwich containers, and cloth napkins. This may not sound like much, but this continued in our family through high school and college. It has evolved into our way of living and my children are now young adults using refillable water bottles and Chico bags. We live with the awareness that what we do impacts our environment and we are grateful to SCARCE for enlightening us.

New Mindset from Earning Earth Flag Print E-mail
"Meeting with Kay, from SCARCE, to discuss the “Earth Flag for Businesses” initiative was an enlightening and informative experience. It was evident from the onset of our meeting that Kay McKeen is a very knowledgeable and dedicated conservationist. In the short amount of time it took to conduct our “green audit,” we learned many simple ways that Subaru Great Lakes Region can modify its business practices to conserve energy and other valuable resources. Shutting off a light switch and computer monitor at the end of the workday will conserve energy. Distributing recycling receptacles throughout our office space will promote the recycling of paper, cardboard, aluminum cans and other materials. These nearly effortless gestures will allow each of us to make a difference in contributing toward the overall “green” environment we wish to maintain at our regional location.

The single most important aspect of our meeting, however, was how our awareness of “green” opportunities immediately increased. Both Linda and I are now more in tune to “green” discussions on the radio, articles in the media and information found by reading labels on products in our household. It is amazing how quickly our paradigm shifted and how much more cognizant we are of environmental impact. We wish to extend our thanks to Kay, and the SCARCE team, for educating us in such an important mission. We look forward to working with them to learn more about environmental strategies that we can adopt for our workplace."

Earning Earth Flag Improved Our Bottom Line Print E-mail

"NOW Foods has been partnering with SCARCE for a number of years. This partnership led us to undertake efforts which resulted in SCARCE recognizing NOW Foods as the first for-profit company to earn the Earth Flag for Business. The experience has been extremely positive for our company as a whole and for individual employees. For NOW, the Earth Flag is a symbol of what we can achieve when we work together to promote environmental sustainability. It’s a symbol of what we’ve accomplished, and a symbol of what we continually strive to be. Since being awarded the Earth Flag, NOW has been recognized by the Illinois Recycling Association with the 2007 Outstanding Business Recycling Program award. Our recycling program diverted almost 50% of our refuse from the landfill and provides NOW with a financial benefit of $40,000 a year. Our Board of Directors recently chartered an Environmental Sustainability Committee which endeavors to implement measures which conserve energy and resources. SCARCE has been, and continues to be, integral to NOW’s environmental efforts. We consider SCARCE a partner and an invaluable resource."
- Dan Scoles, Safety Manager, at NOW Foods
