What Teachers Are Saying About the Watershed Model ... Print E-mail

I used the watershed model last week and the students really enjoyed it, it really drove the point home. It will be something they will remember. What a great investment. I think a groundwater model would be a great addition. The idea of groundwater is pretty abstract to many students and a visual/working aide would be extremely helpful. I used the model just last week as the “hook” to get them interested in our stream chemistry and groundwater unit. The model’s activities and ideas were pretty easy for the highly gifted group, but regardless, they loved spraying the model with rain and putting the pollutants on—they were psyched and ready for the next lessons. I had good luck using the model for one period to pollute then showing a video clip while I cleaned up. Today, I will be using the model again to demonstrate solutions to the problems. I am using this as part of our chemistry unit and tying it in to water being the universal solvent and a limited resource. Sounds like a stretch but it is working pretty well.

I used the watershed model a couple weeks ago in my 6th grade science class. It was a great experience that helped my students understand everything that is happening to their water. The students really enjoyed this activity. I also showed a video while I cleaned up because it took about 20 minutes to clean off and dry all of the materials used for the watershed.
