Illinois Electronics BANNED

beginning January 2012
SCARCE Logo

Governor Quinn recently signed legislation which extends the number and kinds of electronics that manufacturers must collect and refurbish or recycle. The goal of the legislation is to keep our electronics which contain valuable natural resources as well as some toxic materials out of the landfills.

All of the items shown must be recycled.

United Nations
2012 International Year of
Sustainable Energy for All

"Participants at a major international event on energy that opened in the Austrian capital (earlier this year) ... called for bold steps and strategic public-private partnerships to guarantee universal energy access by 2030, including by expanding the use of renewable energy sources."

The initiative set forth seeks to involve both national and private sectors in an effort to promote the importance of sustainable energy for everyone no matter where they are in the world and to understand the enabling power that comes from having such energy available.

The goal has a three-fold objective which the UN hopes to meet by 2030:

* Ensuring universal access to modern energy services.
* Doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
* Doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix

INSTITUTE DAY WORKSHOPS
SCARCE LogoSo, What's Up with Helium (Tantalum, Lithium, & Neodymium)?

Institute Day - Friday, March 2, 2012

8:00 am - 2:00 pm

5.0 CPDUs

Did you use your cell phone, Apple iPod or Amazon Kindle today?

When you use an electronic device, you are using natural resources (gold, tantalum, tin, tungsten, etc.) that are seemingly irreplacable and scarce.

These rare earth minerals are crucial to the economy and strategic to our nation and world.

Each plays an important role in our day-to-day lives, affecting people, the planet, and the economy. Yet, most people don't even know that they exist, or that we are using them up.

This workshop has broad applications in earth science, environmental science, social science, technology, and economics. Guest speakers are from business, science, and education.

Teachers in grades 3-12 are invited to join us at Argonne Labs at this STEM workshop (Integrating STEP into Middle School) to discover more about these vital, rare earth resources.
